INTER-EMPIRE TRADE.
Summarising in the Contemporary Review for November the information in Mr. Chamberlain's recently issued Blue Book bearing on colonial trade, Mr. M. G. Mulhall arrives at a number of interesting conclusions, of which the following may be quoted : — That the trade of the colonies compared with ten years ago has risen 8 per cent. That their trade with Great Britain has increased 2 per cent. ; with foreign countries 30 per cent. That their consumption of British merchandise has declined £6,000,000, while their imports of foreign goods have increased .£10,000,000. That colonial exports to Great Britain have risen 12 per cent. ; to foreign countries, 32 per cent. That the trade of the British Empire is increasing much faster thau that of Great Britain, and that the latter is not diminishing. That it would be foolish to attempt to make the eornmercial interests of the colonies subservient to those of the United Kingdom. That • inasmuch as the progress of the colonies indirectly promotes tho welfare of the Mother Country, tho expansion of their trade with foreign countries is not a motive for regret.
