CHRISTMAS TRADE.

Last year the trade locally amongst retailers was of a satisfactory character, but this year the prospects are not nearly so good : at any rate shopkeepers are complaining at the dullness. Business has been slack for several weeks past, and has been felt in tho wholesale and retail trades, while professional men, too, have been complaining at the sluggishness. The ravages of influenza have kept the medical profession extra busy, and the chemists, too, have benefited slightly. The shopkeepers usually look for a harvest at Christmas time, and a dull season iB disheartening. This week may show an improvement.
