The quarterly banking returns show a decrease in the liabilities of £767,000, and the coin and bullion decreased by £518,000, as compared with the June quarter. The proportion of cash held by the banks to liabilities is Ss 10£ d, as compared with 4s lid last quarter. The Swimming Association has decided to add a 220 yds Championship event to its annual programme. For economic reasons the Government has decided that there shall be no Easter encampment next year. Beisbane, This Day. A return laid on the table of the Legislative Assembly snows the total indebtedness of the colony to be £34,600,000. The Government is taking steps to prevent the importation into Queensland of the diseased apples which recently arrived in Sydney from New Zealand. Melboubne, This Day. Later reports on the growing wheat crops are less reassuring. In many places the crops are withering and deteriorated. In the Goulbourn Valley and Western districts the estimated average is eight bushels to the acre. Numbers of Victorian farmers are leaving their holdings and taking up land in Queensland.
