THE TRAMWAYS. TO THE EDITOR.
Sie — Will you kindly allow m 9 space to suggest to our very worthy Mayor that, instead of making provision for a double tramway by the present route, it would be better to have a new or loop line through other streets, and so give tramway facilities to many persons to whom the present service is of little use ? For instance, let us have a tramway branching from the present one at the junction of Willis and Manners - streets, and going by Upper Willis, Abel Smith, Taranaki, Wallace, and Oliver (or John) streets, to the junction of Adelaide-road and RiddiEordstreet. Presently it Could be taken up Adelaide-road and on to Inland Bay. Taranaki and Wallace streets would need levelling in a few places, as has already been suggested by another writer, and would then be more used than at present for general traffic. Another useful route would" Be from the Government railway station at Thorndon, ■ by Featnerston and Hunter streets, Jervoisquay or Victoria-street (by the Te Aro railway station) and Tory-street to the present line in Courtenay-place. It will be observed that these proposed lines will all connect with and form branches of the present line, and will permit of a more speedy and punctual service than now exists, and will also tend to divert traffic from streets which are becoming too congested, especially Adelaideroad and Willis-street. Indeed, the Willisstreet line might be used only for the new route by Upper Willis-street, &c, and the line by Featherston-street, &c, could be used for both the Cuba-street and Courtenayplace traffic. Whether the Corporation should take over the present tramway service | and make the" new lines, or give concessions to the Tramway Company to induce it to do so, I leave to wiser heads than that of Old Chum, j 20th July, 1897. !
