NEW SOUTH WALES PARLIAMENT.
« AN INTERIM FINANCIAL STATEMENT. ESTIMATED SURPLUS OF £104,000. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Sydney, 29th April. The Legislative Assembly adopted the Address-in-Reply. (Received April 30, 10.20 a.m.) Sydney, This Day. An interim Financial Statement presented shows that the Treasurer expects the revenue to exceed -the estimate by £18,000, and that he will be able to carry forward a credit balance of £104,000 for the year ending 30th June. Referring to predictions of failure of the Land Tax, it is admitted that if the determined, clever, and remorseless efforts of highly-talented and powerful members of the community had succeeded, failure would have resulted. He wished the Commissioners could let the House know the sj'stematic efforts heing made to defraud the Treasury. He was ashamed to say that some of the worst offenders were amongst the shining lights of the community. With all these disadvantages, the tax for 1896 would yield £275,000. The railway revenue had increased £150,000 as compared with the preceding year.
