[by telegraph— press association.] Dunedin, 31st December. At the inquest on the body of George Clearwater, the evidence showed that deceased was riding one horse and leading a young one. They appear to have taken fright and bolted, and the boy was picked up insensible. Marton, This Day. Mr. Emmanuel Snellgrove, J.P., who arrived in Wellington in February, 1859, died on New Year's Eve, aged 78. He had resided for 36 years in this district. Napier, This Dat. Fred Apperley, 14 years of age, was drowned whilst bathing at Hastings yesterday. Strenuous efforts were made by the deceased's brother to save him, but tailed. The body lias been recovered. • Invekcargill, This Dat. Through, a horse swerving off the course at the Orepuki races yesterday an old miner named Michael Hennessy was knocked down and sustained injuries from which he died this morning. , Christchubch, This Day. The late train from Rangiora last night ran into a hansom cab on the Colombo-street crossing, killing the horse. The driver was badly shaken and was taken to the Hospital. Bulls, This Dat. Rangipai fell in the Hurdle Race run here to-day, and his rider, Higgins, was badly injured. A singular accident happened at Worser Bay this morning, owing to the vagaries of the high wind. Mr. Croll, chief engineer to the Wellington Meat Export Company, was bowling along on his cycle when a wandering corrugated iron bathing shed^ which the wind had taken charge of and lifted off the beach, bore down upon him and knocked . him senseless. He was picked up and carried in to one of the neighbouring cottages, where he was subsequently attended by Dr. Anson, who found the patient much shaken and bruised, and suffering from a sprained ankle. He had recovered consciousness when the doctor left, but it will be some days before he ' recovers from the effects of the accident. A man named F. Bryant was admitted to the Hospital on New Year's Eve, having been found bleeding and unconscious near the Free Public Library. He was badly cut about the head and face, and is supposed to have tripped and fallen on the pavement. He was reported better to-day.
