THE VOLUNTEERS.
The weekly parade of the Wellington Navals was held last night. Lieut.-Com. Campbell was in command, and there were also present Lieuts. Bell, Cooper, and Biss. There was an exceedingly good muster, and after the men had been marched off to their duties Major Messenger inspected them. The annual picnic will be held on the 9th November, and a sub-committee consisting of Gunners Petersen, Couper, and Stott has been appointed to select the spot. In order to test the various links of communication between captains of corps and their men, Colonel Webb has decided to notify each commanding officer in the Otago district that within a few hours of receipt of an order he will be required to parade his corps for inspection. A commencement \yas made a few days ago with the Dunedin City Guards, and at 4 o'clock the captain was instructed to parade his men in the Garrison Hall at 8 o'clock. The result was a muster of 40 members out of 52 upon the roll. Of the 12 absentees two were at work in the country, one was detained by the death of a relative, it was found impossible to communicate with three, and six were not accounted for. The Otago Daily Times considers the test a very satisfactory one, ! and states that tho Colonel expressed himself as well pleased with the result.
