The annual report of the Union Steamship Company's Benefit Sooiety states that trfc total reoeipta for the year (inoluding the oompany's contribution of JMffl 6s Id) have been .£2947 3a lid, while the expenditure has amounted to £2,159 11s fid, leaving a surplus of .£lB7 12s 5d on the year's operations. This amount, added to the balanoe at the beginning of the year, .£3701 11s Id, brings the total funds up to £3889 3s 6d. The small inorease in funds as oompared with previous years is attributable to calls amounting to .£576 16s 8d made through the wreok of the Wairarapa, on account of whiob. .£l9O was paid in funeral allowances, je2Bo voted from the Benevolent Fund to 28 members among the survivors, and J6106 16s 8d in sick pay to 12 of the Bame members while they were suffering from exposure and injuries reoeived at the wreck. The membership of the sooiety is now 881, of whom 195 contribute under Table 11. Subscriptions have been reoeived from 28 honorary members during the year.
