EXTRAORDINARY OCCURRENCE AT SEA.
A VESSEL DAMAftED BY A WHALE. |~PBKSS ASSOCIATION ] Stdnbt, Ist September. The barque Handa Isle 'ias arrived from Meronry Bay in a damaged condition. At noon on 24th August two immense whales approaohod the vessel, and one dived under her and the other //truck the veßsel amidships with tremendoui, foroo. Several planks were stov i in and smashed, and water bogan to make aL the rate of a foot an hour. The captain then decided to throw overboard the deck cargo of timber, with a view of raisins the hole above the water-line. The pumps were kept going throughout the afternoon and night, and noxt day, the vessel boing lightened, the water was got undor and the breaoh stoppei with pillows and hides. The water was then easily checked. The last seen of tho whale whioh struok the vessel was as it sank tail foremost, a mass of blood. Had it not been that the vossel had a timber cargo, it is believed she wonld have foundered. On the 28th, tho Handa Me foil in with a heavy gale, but stood the test well, despite her crippled condition.
