CITY COUNCIL.
? The fortnightly meeting of the City Connoil last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr. C. M. Luke) and Councillors Fraser, Anderson, Harris, Haroourt, Smith, Tanner, Devine, Myors, Buber, Willeston, Penty, and Tatum. Messrs. Crewes and Turtle attendod as a deputation from the aettlera on the Corporation reserve at Pahiatua, and asked for a reduction of the rents, owing to the low prices of produce. The Mayor and Counoillor Frujor pointod out tbat the Counoil .had no power to reduoe. The request, however, was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr. P. J. Bolleston wrote tendering the thanks of Mrs. Richmond for the letter of oondolence sent by the Counoil in oonneoliou with tho death of the late Judge Richmond. A lettter from the Junior Cnoket Association asking for two pitohej at Newtown Park dnring the coming season was referred to the Hoßorveß Committee. The Road Metal Committee recommended that metil should be paid for by weight instead of by measure when found desirable ; that tho Corporation should endeavour to acquire a quarry at eaoli end of the town. The oommittee had visited one quarry at the north end. It recommended that further information be obtained, and that a small sum be expended in opening up thiß quarry to ascertain the exact quality of the stone ; also that a permanent Committee be set np to report at intervals on the question generally. The report was referred to the Piiblio Works Committee. Iho City Kesorvos Committee rocommended that the gorse be cleared from seations 17, 18, and 19, Town Belt, before they are pnt up for lease ; that Mr. W. Moxhata be allotted to assign the lease of seotion 48, Town Belt, to an approved tenant ; and that the sexton be instructed to keep the grave of the late Sir Harry Atkinson in order. The report waß adopted. Tho following recommendations of the Electric Lighting Committee were adopted : —1. That tho 2000 candle-power aro lamp be erected at the approach to the Queen's Wharf, a3 formerly agreed upon. 2. That the New Zealand Electrical Syndicate be allowed to commenoe lighting the lamps on Jervois-quay by steam power at once. The Committee proposes to go round the oity at an early date with the view of making a reoommendation with respect to the ereotion of new lamps, and in the meantime will note any requirements for lamps made by Councillors. It was decided that the drainage works in oonneotion with the houses of M. Fruhauge (Taranaki-strcet), Elizabeth Standen (Owenstreet), and W. H. Simons (Tinakori-road) should be done on the deferred payment system. The Pablio Works Committee's report, which has already been published, was read. The question of ereoting a retaining wall on Mrs. Warren's property in Bidwell-street was referred back to the Committee. Counoillor Fraser movad to strike out the reoommendation tliut .£2O should be paid to Messrs.'Brown & Dean as legal costs in connection with the Bpring on Grant-road. Thin was seconded by Counoillor Barber, but loßt. The reoommendation was then adopted. All the other olanses in the report were adopted. Councillor Tatum moved " That effect be given to notioe_of motion No. 78t, viz., that five or six acres of Town Belt in each ward be immediately fenced off and prepared for tree planting and that the societies and oitizens interested in tree planting be requested by letter and advertisement to assist in planting, suoh roserves." The motion was seconded by Councillor Tanner and lost, an amendment by Counoillor Barber, that the matter shonld be referred to the Beserves Committee, being carried.
