A QUEER SUBSCRIPTION SCHEME.
|bt tjjliqeaph.— p3sss association.] , Dunbdin, This Dat. A somewhat singular onse was before the Police Coarb yesterday. Peter Braen, engaged as a clerk by the Unemployed Relief Committee, was oharged with fraudulent represoatation with a view to obtaining money. Braen wrote to the gangers over the unemployed stating that a subscription was bointr got up for a woman who had been reduced to very destitute oiromnstances, and that if the men gave 6d or Is to help her, it would refloat credit on them, as showing that they were willing- to assist. As a result, over £7 was subscribed by the men, and Bruen paid this over to Mrs. Dunn, with whom he was boarding. Mrs. Dunn is separated from her husband, and is in receipt of 10s per week from him. On receiving the money Bruen cauaod a paragraph to be published mentioning that a oase of destitution having been brought before the men it had received prompt attention. Braen in his evidenoe said he know Mrs. Dunn's oironmstanoes, and thonght by raising a small Bum he oonld help her. He produced reoeipta from her for the money, lhe Benoli deoided that though Bruen's conduot wai unjustifiable and imprudent he had paid the money to the woman, and sb there was no fraud intended the cue would be dismissed.
