THE BELIEF WORKS.

The General Committee of the local Relief Works met at the Benevolent Institution's offioe this morning. There were presentMr. T. J. Gale (in the chair), the Rev. H. Van Staveren, and Messrs. E. W. Mills, G. H. Baylis, J. Sannders, and L. L. Harris. A Permanent Works Committee was appointed, which will meet next Friday morning. Tho Works Committee appointed pro tern reported that Mr. J. Brnce had been appointed overseer in charge of the works. A chequo for £2 2s towards the f and was announced as having been received from Messrs. M'Tavish & Co. 'It was resolved to apply to the Denevolenfc Institution for .£IOO for wages, in order that the men may be paid on Saturday. The committee will inspect the gronnd shortly in order to settle the drainage scheme. The fallowing farther subscriptions are acknowledged :— Kirkcaldie & Stains' employes, .£9 os6d; A. E. Kernot, .611s; J. Maginnity. £1 Is; G. M'Morren, £1 Is; Rev. H. Van Staveren, £1 Is; Dr. Martin, £3, 2s jA. J. M'Tavish & Co., £2 2s. Total to date, £727 16s Id. |BT TELIGBAPH. — FBESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedim, 13th August. The unemployed relief works have now bof>n in operation for nine weeks, and over £2300 has been paid in wages. In the first week 79 men were employed, and over £37 paid in wages ; in the ninth week 403 were employed and £369 I*3 8d paid in wages. The aotnal number of applicants for work is 950. ______^__
