ABOUT '"GANDA."
« Here is alittle "lesson in Swahili," from the Westminster Gazette, which may be of use now that East African topics are bo much to the fore : — "Until quite recently most people were content to speak of Uganda, but of late it has become fashionable to use the name Buganda when refering to the country. The former is the Swahili form, and the latter the name used by the inhabitants themselves. In Swahili, which is the lingua franca of Africa, the country is cabled Uganda, an individual inhabitast is called Mganda, the people are re- ' ferred to as the Waganda, and the language is called Kiganda. Among Mwanga's subjects their country is
known as B Uganda ; they allude to themselves as Bnganda, and to tbeir I language as Luganda."
