THE MODERN MAN.
This is the modern man's characteristics, as the New Woman sees him :—: — His want of imagination. He cannot understand the modern woman, because the only two typeß in his comprehension are, as Madame Sarah Grand daintily describes them, " the Cow-woman " and " the Scumwoman." * Hie inconsistency. He preaches morality to, woman, but ho does not care about being moral himself. He is not a law to himself, but only to "the inferior sex." Morally, in point of fact he is in his infancy. His egotism. He has boundless assurance. He thinks woman can not do without him. He wants the standard of his pleasure and convenience to be woman's conscience. His un aesthetic taste. His idea of beauty is to be found — well, let us say, at the music halls. His courage — only physical, and never moral. Moreover, he is growing increasingly effeminate. When girls and wives are up and about, he is usually snoring in bed. His love of scandal. It is at men's clubs that most of the scandalous stories are invented or spread.
