♦■ The Wellington Ciub held a very bugoessful praotido on No. 1 ground, Petone, on Saturday, the first fifteen playing the next eighteen. The fifteen won by 27 points (new scoring) to nil, but this doos not at all represent the play, whioh was vory " willing " from the start. 'J he juniors held their own in the forward division, but the back play of the fifteen proved too strong for the cots. Johnston, A. Duncan, Roe (2), Strange, Bishop, and Smithers obtained tries, the three last-named players' scores being converted by A. Duncan. No attempt was made to inoreago Roe's second score. A. and K. Duncan, Johnston, Strange (backs), Bishop, Thompson, Roe, and Hutohinson (forwards), put in some good work for the 15 ; Dunne, H. Thompson, Roaoh, Stuart (baoks), Reid, Barnett, Galbraith, and Gallagher (forwards), showing up prominently for the 18. Two spells of 40 minute* were played, Mr. G. Faohe acting as referee. The touchline judges were Messrs. Bate and Callis. The Poneke-Potone game was not playod on Saturday, owing to the town team being nnablo to plaoe a fifteen in the field. A ■cratoh match was played. M'Kenzie (Petone) and Pndney (Poneke) picked Bides the former's side winning by 15 points (now rules) to 10. M'Kenzio scored three tries and King two tries for the victors, but there were no attempts to convert the scores. Podney and E. E. Woon obtained tries for tho losers, for whom Laurie potted a goal. There was not muoh enthusiasm shown by the men, several of whom played a " waiting " game. Two half-hour spells wero played, Mr. T. R. Ellison aoting as roferee. Mossrs. Taylor and King wore tho lino umpires. Tho Oriental-Athletio game, which was played at Petono on Satnrday, was won by tho former olub by 16 points to lovo. H. R. Woon, Mooller, and W. Woon (2), scored tries H. R. Woon converted hia own try, and M'Leod placed a goal from one of W. Woon's scores.! The Oriental Club expect to have the eorvicas this season of G. H. Lorimer, who oaptained the first fifteen when it won the Junior Cup in 1891. Tho Melrose first defeated the Athletic first at Island Bay on Saturday by 26 points to 8. For the visitors Burke scored throe - tries, Conder two tries, and Twomey one i try ; all bnt one being converted by Bell and ' Campbell. Hall ar.d Lambert touched down ] for tho losorß, Swindley converting one of ! the tries. t There waa a good muster of Association players at Hobson-street on Satnrday afternoon, when the season was opened with a . praotice game. Some very good individual play waa shown, the most notable men being ■ Riohardson, Bell, Gamble, Abbott, Wool- ' cott, and Fraser (old players), and Houuoux, 1 Ferine, and Bannister (new players), the j last-named especially showing very strong ' dribbling powers.
