A WEST AFRICAN DISASTER
ATTACK ON A SLAVE-DEALER. BRITISH TROOPS SURROUNDED AND ROUTED. [UNITKD FKKS3 ASSOCIATION.] London, 24th February. Newt has been received from Gambia, West Africa, that a detachment of the West Indian Regiment, accompanied by a force of bluejackets from Her Majesty's ships Raleigh, Widgeon, and Magpie, under the command of Captain Gamble, of the Raleigh, attacked the chief Fodislah, a noted slave-dealer, near Bathurat, the capital of the colony. After the capture of two stockadeß and villages the force while returning to the boats was attacked on all sides. Lieutenants Hervey and Arnold, of the Raleigh, and Lieutenant Meister, of the Magpie, and ten men were killed. Six officors, including Captain Gamble, and 40 men were wounded. The native porters deserted with the ammunition of the British forco, thus adding to the disaster. Fears are entertained for tho safety of the gunbo tt Widgeon, as it is believed that she has been lost.
