The revenue fdr the quarter ended 31st December was £24,071,000. St. Petersburg, 2nd January. Twenty persons connected with the cholera riots in Astrackan have been sentenced to death. Cairo, 2nd January. Four hundred Dervishes attempted to raid the village of Gemai, and were repulsed with three killed. Afterwards they attacked Fort Savais, and were again repulsed. Thoy aro now retreating, and are being pursued by cavalry.

Two French companies have offered to connect Samarkand and Khookand by rail, with a branch line to Tashkend, the line eventually to belong to Russia. Capetown, 2nd January. M. Joubert opposes Kruger for the Presidency of the Transvaal. Madrid, 2nd January. The Princess Isabella will represent Spain at the Chicaoo Exhibition.
