FOOTBALL.
The annual match between Wellington and Canterbury, under Rugby rules, takes place at Newtown to-morrow afternoon, and is expooted to prove a really fino contest. The team selected to represent Wellington is considered to be the very best which could have been picked, and as Canterbury has sent np a strong contingent, a good gamo may bo looked forward to, dospite the fact that the rain which is now falling has made tho ground rather heavy. Mr. T. R. Ellison has boon elected Captain of tho Wellington men, and Mr. J. P. Firth has agreed to act as rofereo. An advertisement elsewhere gives particulars of tho arrangements. Lord and Lady Glasgow hope to be present. The membors of the Canterbury Representative Football Team wore passengers by the Penguin from the South this morning. Thoy wore met on arrival by soveral mombora of tho Recoption Committee and a large nnmbor of the general public, and were greeted with hearty cheering. They havo takon up their quarters at the Albert Hotel. The members of the Christchurch College Club, who take part in tho forthcoming tournament, were also passengers by tho sarao steamer. The Wairarapa Juniors aro to be entertained at luncheon at the Post Office Hotel before tho match at Newtown on Saturday. Mr. J. Bee has been elected captain of the Wellington Juniors. In consequence of tho wet weather yesterday afternoon the match between the Post and Telegraph Department and Government Insurance Depaxtment was postponed until next woek. The following team will represent Woodcote House School against the Wang&nni College to-morrow (Association rules): — J. Otterson, R. Wilson, A. Wallace, A. Grant, R. Burnett, Gardiner, C. Higginson, W. Wearne, S. Richardson (captain), F. Samson, C. Fitzherbert; emergencies, I. Johnston and F. Higginson. Those of our readers who knew Mr. W. J. Rylanoe when he was here in the service of the South British Insurance Co., will bo interested to learn that he is now in Maryborough, Victoria, and is one of the best footballers in the district. Only a few weoks ago he was presented with a gold Maltese cross by a number of football admirers. The Auckland team of Association players, who are on their way South, were taken in hand on their arrival by the Takapuna yesterday by Mr. A. Henderson, hon. secretary of the Wellington Association, and other enthusiasts, and shown the sights of the Empire City. Tho visitors spent some time at the Museum ; and were also at tho House of Representatives.
