At a special meeting of the Auckland Liberal Association it was rrsolved to ask the Government to put an export duty on baulk timber. A number of milk sellers have been fined on charges of milk adulteration. Two boys employed at a flax factory wero to-day sentenced to receive twelve strokes of a birch rod for upsetting fifteen hives of bees, belonging to W. Reid, of Rangiriri. H.M.S. Ringarooma has arrived from a cruise for gun practice on the coast. She goos into Calliope Dock for alterations and repairs. Dunedin, 23rd August. The farmers at Berwick havo joined together to defray tl»o cost of taking legal action to prevent dredging for gold being carried on at Upper Waipori. Tho Acclimatisation Sooiety havo considered tho regulations forwarded by tho Marine Department, and have resolved to adhoro to the perch fishing season, namoly, from Ist December to 15th April. The regulations as to trout licensos wero agreed to, except as to boys' licenses, the Society being of opinion that tho liconse-fco for youths nnder 16 should be 10s. The Rev. W. J. Habens, Secretary to the Education Department, is at present in Dunedin, to hold an enquiry into charges of immorality preferred against one of tho officers of the Industrial School. Tho officer has been suspended meanwhile, and Mr. Titohonor, the manager, has banded ovor charge of tho institution to Mr. Palethorpe, of the Burnham School. Greymouth, This Day.
