A FREE PORT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir — Tho desirability of making Wellington a " Froo Port " has been discussed very frequently, as you are awaro, but nothing 'has been done soriously towards attaining 'that consummation so devoutly wished by all ttrno Wollingtonians. It seems to mo, sir, that if tho dues of various sorts wore abolished wo would, in a very short space of a time, get the major portion of the shipping business of the colony into our own hands. Even the direct atoamors, which invariably bring cargo for more than one port, would undoubtedly centro all thoir transhipments hero. Tho increase in various ways would soon wholly ovortako tho amount of our present dues, and what could be fairer than to pledge tho land valuos of our oitjr for any defioienoy which may arise, and which would bo small, and in a limited time be entirely recouped to landowners and tho City Corporation in other ways? Tho population is steadily increasing, and would immediately by this step reap increasing advantages. I am, &c., .22nd Augnst, 1802. Keklkx.
