It ib reported that the Post Office is averse [ to renewing the New Zealand mail contraot in A San Francisco) which expires in November, on the ground that the route vi& Suez to England is cheaper. Neither the Postal Department nor the Union Company has received any communication respecting the alleged refusal of the Imperial Government to contribute to the San Francisco Mail Service. Though the Postal Department commnnicatod with D the Imperial Government on the subject of . renewing the Bubsidy some timo ago, their only reply so far has been an acknowledgment of the latter. The subsidy at present paid by the Imperial Government is .£5533, but they also pay the coat of conveying the mails through Amorica and across the Atlantic, which brings their contribution to nearly .£15,000 annually.
