VITAL STATISTICS.

The Registrar-General's return of vital statistics for July in the several boroughs shows the number of births and deaths, and the proportion of deaths to 1000 of populato have been as follows: —

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 396, against 387_ in June—an increase of 9. The deaths in July were 199—an increase of 15 on the number In June. Of the total deaths, males contributed 118; females, 81. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under S years of age, being 2714 per cent, of the whole number ; 32 of these were under 1 year of age. The following remarks apply only to the four principal boroughs, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin :—The births in July were 207, against 209 in June, a decrease of 2. The deaths amounted to 111, against 105 in Juno, an increase of 6. There were 22 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards—6 males, of 76, 75, 74, 69, 68, and 65 years, and 2 females of 83 and 65 years, died at Auckland; 1 male of 72, and 2 females of 85 and 72, at Wellington; 3 males of 82, 72, and 68, and 1 femalo of 80, at Christchuroh; 3 males of 70 (2) and 66, and 4 females of 93, 83, 81, and 78, at Dunedin. There were only 10 deaths from specific febrile or zymotic diseases in July, against 11 in June, 17 in May, and 21 in April. Influenza was fatal in 3 cases at Anokland last month, and 1 at Christchuroh ; in Juno thero was 1 death at Auckland. Diphtheria and whooping-cough, which wero observed at Auckland and Christchurch in June, disappear in July from the causes of death. There was 1 doath from typhoid fever at Christehurch, against 5 in June. Tho absence of deaths from this last disease at Wellington is noticeable in view of tho mortality during tho previous four months, which amounted to 19 deaths. The deaths from diarrhoea in the four boroughs was only 3; in February there were 38. Tho mortality for Jaly from constitutional disoases (30 death) was much greater than in June, when thero wore only 17 doaths. Tho chjof canso of the increase is found to bo phthisis, which destroyed 18 lives, an exceptionally large number. Cancer was the next in order, causing six doaths. Fifty deaths are found to have resulted from local diseases, against 57 in June, Diseases of the respiratory system wero most fatal, causing 14 deaths, of which no less than eight took place at Auckland. Of violent deaths the six deaths were all from accidental caußes. One was by fall from a train, another from falling down stops. Thoro wero two cases of accidental burning, both of children under five years of ago.
