THE UPOLU.

Tho steamer Upolu. the latest addition to tho Union Company's magnificent fleot of ■tcamcra, arrived early yestorday morning, and wan berthed alongside the George-street pier. Tho Upolu is intended for the South Sea trade, and is named aftor the prinoipal island in the Samoan Group, on whioh the town of Apia is situated. She was built by Measrs. Fleming & Ferguson, of Paisley, entirely of mild stool, on the cellular bottom principle, with four watertight compartments and provision for 258 tons water ballast. Sho has a straight stem with an elliptical stern. She is sohooner rigged, her dimensions being— Length, 220 f t; beam, 30ft; and 24ft Din depth of hold, and three docks, including awning deck. Sho has three hatchways, with steam winohos to each and steam windlass. She is fitted with » fan engine for ventilating her holds. The captain's room, whioh is on tho upper deck, forward, just under tho bridgo, is in walnut, with panels of bird's-eye inaplo, and is fitted with overy convenience, and npholstorod in crimson plush ; abaft which is the ongineroom and stokohole entrance, noxt to which is the smokingroom, which is in syenmoro and walnut, with marble tables, American porforaiod seats, the floor being of encaustic tilos. Tho after house contains two staterooms, from which tho saloon is approached by a largo staircase from the social hall, and is tastefnlly decorated throughout, boing in polished oak, with handsome cornico moaldings. Two tables run down tho centro ; the royolving chairs and setteos are upholstered in crimson velvet. At the fore end of the saloon is a sideboard, ovor which is a mirror and dock; at tho after end are the linen lookers. Forward of the staircase is tho pantry, fitted with overy convenience. There are eight largo state-rooms, for the accommodation of 32 passengers. Eaoh of tho state-rooms ig fitted with marble woshstands, mirrors, and lifebelts, and the couches are upholsterod in crimson plush . Thoro arc also bathrooms, lavatories, and other conveniences. The second cabin, situated amidships and approached from the uppor deok, is most comfortably fitted up, containing pantry, stewards' room, and also bathroom, with accommodation for 20 passengers. Tho officers have also very comfortable quarters on the main deck, on which is also situated the galluy, butcher's shop, bakery, &c, while thesoamon and firemen nave most comfortable quarters forward. In fact, nothing socms to have been left undono which would conduce not only to the comfort aud convenience of tho passengers, but also to her crew, she being splendidly ventilated both foro and att. Her engines are on tho quadruple expansion condensing principle, her cylinders being loin, 23in, 30in, and 45in respectively, with a 33in stroke, tho diameter of her shaft being 9in, through crank 14in, with a presBure of 2001b to the Bquaro inoh ; ono steel boiler 14ft 6in in diameter, and 10ft 6in in length. She has throe of Fox's corrugated furnaces, 3ft Mm in diameter and 6ft Cm in length, her consumption of coal being 12 tons per day. She is also fitted with a fan .engine for assisting draught. The Upolu 'has como out under 58 days, in command of ,J. C. Arthur, U.N.8., who has associated with him Mr. T. Braidwood as chief officer, Mr. Ashford second, and Mr. Grant third ; the engine department being under the ■charge of Mr. Small, Mr. Symington second, Mr. Fisher third, and Mr. Johnson fourth. — Otago Times, Ist Maroh, 1892.
