[The Grand Duke Louis IV. of Hesso was. born 12th September, 1837, and suooeeded'. to tho Dukedom in 1877. He waa married in 1862 to Alice, second daughter of HerMajesty Qneen Victoria, who died on the 14th Deooniber, 1878. John Cairns, D.D., LL.D., was born in Berwickshire in August, 1818. He was educated at tho University of Edinburgh and at tho University of Berlin, and was minister of tho United Presbyterian Churoh at Berwiok-on-Tweed from 1845 to 1876. In 1867 he became Professor of Apologetios in the United Presbyterian Church, and when the Hall was reorganised in 1876 he removed to Edinburgh, toaohing Systematic Theology as well.
