BACING FIXTURES July 11— Welliutfton K.C. Steeiilcclinso Mcehig July 18— Umtuil lliiut Club Steeplechases. August 13— N.Z. Grand National Mori ing. August 15— Christchurch H.C. Steeplechaser. [Notes bt Austral.) WELLINGTON fI.C. HANDICAPS. Mr. Evett's handicaps for tho *W H-l'. Meeting reached ua on Saturday moinni^ and are now engaging the attention of our local punters. Ido not ca.ro for tbe niiir.nei in which Mr. Evott piles the weight on t<> ,i liorrtti becau.si; ho wins a few races as ho liu-. ilono in several instances, but [ will c to Boggarman's cano. Thti horse wa« allot ttd P-tt in tho fir.it day's hurdles at mir l:-sL mooting, whioh ho won easily, anil next day ho w;is raised 2st and v.on. The company against him was very poor, Mnyboy running second, and now licggarinan is asked to carry 12st 31b, another rise of 171b, against hnrdlors of the first water. Suoh tactics as thoso do not givo an owner a show, and when prohibitive woights are thus allotted owners aro tompted to run thoir nags '" stiff" so as to tako the weight off. In tho Trial Steeplechase), Taurackaitai, with 12tit 121b in this company, I fancy ■iomowhat, but ho will doubtless be reserved for the principal evont should he bo brought to Wellington. Christmas (lOst 41b) is my fancy, and I also hold a good opinion of Dangorous (lOst 41b), Roger (lOst 21b), Te Ata (9st 91b), and Chance (9st 71b). With a list of 34 in the nurdles, it is rather a difficult task of selecting a probable winnor. Alma's weight appeared in print at 13at 31b, but the correct weight is 13st, which should not put him out of it, while Irish King, although ho is going well, ought not to concede Sentinel weight, tho latter not having a pound too much at 12st 91b after his win at Auckland with Hat 121b. If Beggarman has improved sinco last April ho might show up with 12st31b, but Pyramus (list 7lb) has always been a groat fancy of mine, and despite his having to meet Darnloy on 281b worse terms than ho did at Napier, I will trust to his ability to win, as I know a little about the pace ho is possessed of. If Angler (lOst Gib) can got over his fences ho mv.st bo reckoned with, bnt Whalebone sliould not bo asked to givo Christmas , r »lb after tho lattcr's win at Egmont. Mooting Pyramus with a difforenco of 181b, if Oakland* would try ho should got a bit nearer to tho Hawke's Bay winner than ho did at that place. Ruro (9st 101b) reads as if sho will bo amongst tho first flight, and Theorem (9»t 101b) should bo handy if ho is as good as he is reported to bo. With tho exception of Waterbury, nothing further down tho list strikes mo as likely to conceal tho winnor, which should corns from Pykasiuh, Sentinel, Oakland.-), Here, Theorem, and Wivterbury. With 12st 121b oppobito his name in the Wellington Stoopiochaso, Alma is not overburdened, an this gaino xon of Tho Painter will be all there at staying tho distance. Irish King is again harahly treated, and I doubt \vhothor Lunn will bring his two charges from Christchurch to compete. Sontinol (12st 21b) I considor tho piok of the handicap, for Tauruokaitai is now mooting Sentinel with Olbs in tho lattor's favour than when tho two last mot at Napier, whore Sonthicl, according to somo good judges, would hayo troubled tho winnor had not Sontincl's jockoy boon ont-genorallcd. Tauraokaitai holds everything safo till my oye oatchcM Darnley at lOst 51b. I have somo rospeot for this horso.and if ho is " jigging" ho will boat moro than beats him. 000 and Whalobono, lOst, aro not to bo despised, and Dangerous and Christinas, Ost 101b, aro both good stayors and jumpers ; while Otaiori, 9st 101b, is woll handicapped on recent running, which will do him a lot of good. With a half mile less to go than at Napier, Yardman is well in at Ost 81b, as ho led the fiold at that place for a couple of miles. Of the othors I do not caro much about, and in saying that tho winner will como from Sentinel, Tnaraokaitai, Darnloy, Oeo, Christmas, Otaieri, and Yardman, I do not think I will bo far off tho mark. Tho disappointing Jet d'Eau heads tho list of the Ladies' Trophy with 12st 121b, and is iv vory woll, being as ?ood as anytliing to supply tho winner if Mr. Gollan "wants" him. Rotina, 12st 71b, if sho is a starter, should hold all tho othors safe, but Beggarmon, 12st 51b, is not slow on tho flat. Angler is only considered a 51b bottor horso than Norton, but I would sooner havo tho former, while both havo to givo weight to Lenoro, list 71b, who, if herself, should hold all below her safe ; and to sum thorn np, I liko the chances of Mr. Gollan's selected, Boggarman, Angler, Norton, and Lonoro. In tho High Woight Hukatorc looks well in, as aUo do Courauto, Pyramus, and Eufus. I hopo to soo good acceptances, and with fine weather we will have a vory successful mooting to wind up tho season. Tho horses in cliargo of Mr. T. H. Hill at Island Bay nro all in excellent health. Retina is kept at easy pacing, but it is doubtful as to whether she will bo seen out at tho W.R.C. Meeting. Kangaroo fancies Ills old racing days aro returning, and strides along in good stylo. It is thought that ho wiE Bee the post for tho big evont at our meeting next month. Tho two hunters, Druid fcwl-Kapipi^-luum-bQen-jumßine^asi. oellontly, and aro doing good work. Sword^ bolt is being hacked about, while tho St. George — Red Roso yearling colt had the breaking-in tackle on him last wook, and took things kindly. 1 hear good roports of Honest John, who will be a candidate for tiie Hunt ' Club Steeplechase, but I have not seen him so far. The loase of the Island Bay racocourso has expired, and will not be used for training purposes by Mr. T. Hill after next week, when ho doparts to take up bis rosidenco at tho Hntt, having leased the stables formerly ocoupied by Messrs. F. Doonmth and P. Murtagh for 12 months. Carbino is reported to bo in rare f ettlo, and I notice he is a regular attendant at Flemington, while Cuirassier is working well at Caulfield. It is considered doubtful by some present as to whother Tauraokaitai or Sentinel would have won tho Hawke's Bay Steepleohaso if Sentinel had not missed the last fence. It appears Sentinel was taking tho hurdle rathor wido, and Tauraekaitai's jockey saw his chanco and brought his horse alongside Sontinol so as to knock him " out of touoh," whioh ho succooded so far as to unseat Sontinol's rider, who came in contaot with tho wing of the hurdle. Tho raoing on tho whole was excellent, and tho mooting was a magnificont success. Two Melbonrno Cnp winnors— Wollamai and Shoot Anchor — havo diod recently in Australia, while Strop, tho runner-up to the Assyrian in tho Molbourne Cup, has doparted from this world. Foxton is spokon of as a likely winnor ovortho littlo sticks. He is jumping woll at Wanganni, where Cretonne has been put in work, and will doubtless soo the post for tho New Zealand Cup. The weights for tho Melbonrno Cup are now tho chiof topic among tho sporting fraternity, but tho limited space at my disposal forbids me reviewing them in detail. The Now Zealand horses entered havo been given ateadiors which in some cases aro hardly justifiable. Mr. Gollan's trioTirailleur, Tiraillerio, and Stornohasor— have been doing strong work, especially the former, but it is rathor uncertain whether his contemplated trip will come off. The latter Derby colt is, I hear, a dandy, and will be worth whilo watching during tho coming season. Aftor wading through the list, I liko tho chances best of Carbine, Highborn, Admiral, Vengeance. Correzo, Gresford, King Olaf, Enuo, Little Bernie, Ronald, Elymas, and Lancer. And if I was asked to namo the best, at the presont time ] I would say Hiohboen. Emerald (7st 121b) acted as runner-up to the Musk Rose colt, The Doctor (sst 131b), in tho Trial Stakes at tho Epsom (Melbourne) races on tho 13th inst. The latter was ridden by "Kaiser" Myers, who is engaged as first light weight in S. Cook's stable, a position which Cusdon occupies for Hickenbotham's stable. These two Now Zealand boys aro making a name for themselves on the other sido. In connection with Australian raoing, what a feather in New Zealand's cap it would be if Mr. Douglas were to annox cither the Grand National Hurdles, Steeple, or Maiden Hurdles, with Montroso, Chemist, and Kapo respectively noxt month. All the Now Zealand horses that are on tho spot are well in, and I do not think they will disgrace themselves. The geniel Sooretary of the W.R.C. (Mr. H. M. Lyon) was present at the Hawko's Bay Meeting, and was highly pleased by the manner in which the gathering was carried out. The A.J.C.'s annual income for fees oharged for training purposes now amonnts to but this is not sufficient, and they require it to bo doubled, trainers having to pay in future an annual foo of £8 per horse, for tho uso of Eandwick, £4 being the former charge. Pursoßtnng injured one of her legs the morning previous to the Hawke's Bay races, and after running in tho Steeplechase hor kneo was swollen to an enormous size, and this will prevent her boing present here noxt week— in fact it is doubtful whother she will race again.
