Ho was an elder of St. James' Presbyterian Church. It is Relieved that his death was hastened by the drowning of his son Robert in the Wanganui River recently. Chribtchurch, 15th June. The Canterbury Trades and Labour Conncil has passed the following resolution : " That this Council viewH with satisfaction the programme of tho Government, as shadowed in the Governor's Speech, and j also the retrenchment policy as carried put , during the recess." ' Tho Council approved < the Labour Bills as a whole. The General Committee of the WestCoaßt Railway League met this afternoon. It was reported that tho receipts from tho reconstruction of the League in December, 1885, to tho general meeting in May last had been £367, and the expenditure £367. Since last mooting £66 had beon collected by subscription's limited to ono guinea each. This is to be kept in hand as a reserve fund for futuro operations, should occasion arise. Mr. William Norman, a prominent member of tho Agricultural and Pastoral Association, of which he was once president, died last night, aged 75. He was a passenger by the Sir Goorgo Seymour, ono of the first four ships, and was one of the earliest breeders of Clydesdales in Canterbury. , Dunedin, 15th June. The directors of tho Industrial Co-opora-tive Society deeming tho number of shares, applied for satisfactory, intend to proceed with the registration. This Day. Members of the City Connoil wero indignant yesterday at tho Auditor declining to pass an item of £5 19s for refreshments for members while making their annual inspection of the Silver Stream water race. Somo councillors thought it would be more dignified to put their hands in their own pockets and pay the money, while others thought they should assert the principle that their expenses while doing Corporation business should be paid. Nothing was done in the matter. New Plymouth, This Day. Sir George Grey arrived from Auckland this morning, and is a passenger by the express train for Wellington.
