Th 6 fi'ro originated in a dotaohed bnildiDg iei\ yards from tho hotel. The etrong wind carried tho uparlia on to tbo hotel, wbicb,' notwithstanding the exertions of occupiers and peighbours, was foju defttroyed. Tho huilding was the property of tho Wairarajia Sopth Connty Council, and was inmrod in tbpir favour for £215 in the New Zealand office. Tho atouk and .furniture wa3 insured! by Air. Sexton for i'3oo iv tl^'o samo office. New additions to the .hotel Trare only completed a few mouths sinoo.
