FA TAL A CCIDENT.

♦ • Laet night between 10 and 11 o'clook an accident, which unfortunately resulted fatally, occurred on the road to Kilbirnie, between the Newtown Hotel and the fall of the hill before Kilbirnie is reaohed. The principal victim of the Bad affair is Mr. Arthur Slater Staples, ajed 35 years, who leaves a widow and seven young children, the youngest being a baby of a few months old. It appears that Mr. Staples, who waa employed in the baofc factory of his brother, Mr. W. Staples, was out for a ride in his spring trap. Hisj companions were his wife, a young child, and a lady friend of his wife. The party had called at the Kilbirnie Hotel during the evening, but partaking of no refreshment there, they proceeded towards Newtown, where, having viiited an acquaintance, they retraced their homeward way. The horse Mr. Staples was driving was a newly acquired purchase, and jibbed down the hill, deviating andrnshingdown a somewhat Btsop embankment. Staples would appear to have lost control of the horse, the result being that the trap capsized, throwing the occupants on to the road beneath. Assistance soon brought Dr. McCarthy to the aid of the injured ones, of whom' th» deceased was evidently the most seriously hurt. After a cursory inspection, Dr. McCarthy ordered the removal of Staples to the Hospital, where he lingered till shortly after eight o'clock thia morning, when he expired from the effects of injuries to his head. An inquest will be hold, probably tomorrow. Mrs. Staples, her babe, and her female friend miraculously escaped without serious injury.
