VITAL STATISTICS.

Tho Registrar-General's return, of vital statistics for boroughß during the month of Maroh affords the following results: —

Tho total births in the above boroughs amonnted to 419. against 394 in February, an increase of 25. The deaths is March were 196, an increase of 35 on the number in February. Of the total deaths, males contributed 117; femalas, 79. Eighty of the deaths were of ohildren under 5 years of age, being 4082 per cent, of the whole number; 68 of these were nnder 1 year of ago. In the fonr prmoipal boroughs, Auokland, Wellington, Ohristobnrob, and Dunedin, the

births in March were 227, against 210 in February, an increase of 17. The deaths amounted to 112, against 91 in February. Tiiero were 11 deaths of pei-bdna of 65 years and upwards— 3 males of 80, 66, and 65 died at Auckland ; 2 males of 73 and 66, and 2 femaleH of 88 and 80, at Wellington ; 2 males of 85 and 67, and 2 females of 83 and 72, at Dnntdin. The deaths from specific febrile or zymotic diHeascs inoi eased from 19 in February to 33 in March. Diphtheria caused 1 death, at Wollington, in each month. From typhoid fever there were 6 deaths in March, of which three were at Auckland, 1 at Wellington, 1 at Chrißtchurch, and 1 at Dunedin. In February the deaths numbered 5. The mortality from diarrhcaal complaints increased from 13 deaths in February to 24 in March, hoing heaviest at Wellington, 6 and 9 deaths for the two months respectively. Of 20 deaths from constitutional diseases, 12 were from phthisis and 5 from ciincer. In local diseases the deaths for March numbered 39 (the same number as in January), against 40 in February. There were 8 deaths from diseases of the nervous system, and 10 from diseases of the circulatory syeten). Diseapes of the respiratory system contributed 7 deaths, 6 at Auckland and lat Dtmcdin. Violent deaths amounted 5, all of ntyles, and by accident — 2 adulta were killed oy a fall, and 1 by a plank dropping on hiu, while diacharging cargo, a boy of 14 lost his life by sunstroke, and a man of 69 wan accidentally burnt in a stable.
