Tho Directors of the Kaiapoi Clothing Factory have written to the Tailors' Union stating that the table system is an ordinary detail of the ia ctory management, and that if the company adheres to tbe Union rnles as to the number of apprentices in proportion to the workers, the Unionß havo no right to direot in what manner or by what means their trade is taught them, and that experienced presßers cannot be obtained in this district who can earn wages fixed by the log (5s per week) as the minimum for this class of work. The company are willing to pay a 1 improvers on piecework at log rates, so that they may be paid by the resnlta, if the Union will suspend the rule that all Bnch men must serve throe years before being entitled to piece-work. They are q«ite prepared to pay full log rates to competent pressers if the Union oan furnish suoh to roplace tho fifteen improvers now working in the factory, who must be discharged to comply with the Union conditions. So soon as the bntton hands are sufficiently settled the log rates will be paid. This will take effeot from Ist May. The oarriers have joined the cabmen in boyootting the railway station nntil Constable Kelly is removed. The Tramway Company ran several trams daily to the station yesterday and to-day, bnt haa agreed not to run more than threo, as required by the agreement with the City Council. The Traffic Manager offers to limit Kelly's duties to the station premises, so that ho nhall have nothing to do with the adjacent cabstand or the Town Belt, bnt tho oabmon still deolin* the offer.
