There is a promise of keen competition in the Auckland-Thames Trade, and in addition to the two steamers now running, it is said a new vessel will be built. The early closing movement ia oxtending. Several oitizens have subscribed money in aid of the cause. Dunedin, 30th April. At a well-attended meeting this afternoon, a resolution was carried that it is desirable to establish a publio art gallery for Dunedin, and thataa a step in that direction a fund be raised to purahase Waterloo's " Sunny Hours" and as many other pictures as the funds will buy. The meeting was very enthusiastic, and over ittSO was subsoribed in the room, a strong committee, including many ladiea, being appointed to canvass. At a meeting of tho Hospital Trustees today, it was decided to alter the system of nursing in the direction of employing all female uurseß under a matron qualified to superintend, except in one ward, in which special male oases shall be treated, and a male attendant employed. As soon as the funds already collected are handed over the building of the Nurses' Home is to be proceeded with. This Dat. The torms of Mrs. Campbell's dedication of .£5OOO to the Dunedin Hospital are that the interest on the sum shall be used for providing medical comforts and nursing for hospital patients. iNVEKCAuarLii, 30th April. This evening a cottage in town, owned by A. Wier and occupied by Samuel E. Dennis ton, a carpenter, formerly of Auckland, was burned down. The insurance on the house is not aecertainable, and there is none on the furniture, the greator part of which was destroyed. The fire originated, in a bedroom, to which the kitchen fire had just been transferred. Wbstfobt, 80th April. At the District Court this day, in the action Sinolair v. Abbott, for £200 damages for alleged wrongful distraint, the plaintiff was non-suited, each party paying his own costs. Matthews v. the Deputy Official As1 signee, a. bankrnptoy claim for ,£2OO for wrongful seizure of stook and goods, was adjourned till to-morrow.
