The Volunteers.

«_ The third competition for Mr. John Thompson's trophy by the City Kiflea took place at the Pollhill Gully range this morning. Conditions, 200 and 500 yds, 7 shots at each range. The following are the scoreß :—: —

* Ammunition prizes. An urgent mooting of tho City liifles Shooting Committee will be held at the Volunteer Drillshed to-morrow evening at 8 o'clook. Tho committee of tho Wellington Rifle Association have received a very handsome trophy from Mrs. John Duncan. In handing tho trophy to the committee, Captain Duncan intimated that it was the wish of Mrs. Duncan that it should form one of the prizes for the Ladies' Match. The trophy takes the form of a very handsomely-chased cup, and its possession will be keenly contested at the forthcoming meeting. Wo are informed that the Volunteers aB a whole have taken great umbrage at the remarks made by Major Loveday prior to his dismissal of the battalion parade on Monday evening, and several resignations havo alrondy been sent in. The Guards Finance Committee decided, at a meeting held on Monday evening, that those wishing to attend the Dunedin meeting should fire three matches with the Snider rifle, and the five highest aggregates should have the use at the meeting of the MartiniHenry rifles purohased by the company. The matohes will commence on Thursday morning, at 500 and 600 yards (ten shots at each), and be oontinued on Saturday afternoon at K vans' Bay Range ; one class of ammunition only to be used at eaoh match. A correspondent writes to us, complaining that come Volunteers are in the habit of practising at Evans' Bay targets on Sundays, and hopes the authorities will put a stop to this improper proceeding. The Newtown Rifles will fire for class trophies on Saturday. A Class will fire for Mr. Gennesß' clock, B Claeß for Mr. King'B trophy, and C Class for Mr. Collins' trophy. Each of these prizes have to bo won three times by the same competitor. This match will also count for the aggregate prizeß. There will be two squads— Morning at 5 o'clock, and [afternoon at 2 o'clock ; Cadet range. Ammunition at Mount Cook on Friday night from 7 till 8.
