Aquatics. THE REGATTA.

Tho canvassers for tho Regatta havo met with fair sucoess during the past few days, and as the Squadron will be hero during the Regatta, it is expeoted that a good many entries from the warships as well as the local Naval and Torpedo Corps will be made. With a view to making this race a feature of the programme Messrs. Walter Nathan & Co. have presented the Committee with a handsome prize for competition in this class. Tho same firm has also presented a onp for the Sculling Race. Messrs. Hislop & Co. have given medals for the College Fours, while Mesars. Grady, Young, and Kohn have each presentod prizes. Several other trophies are promised from other tradesmen, and these and the liberal subscriptions which should be forthcoming, as has been the case in former years, should enable the committee to make tho two days' regatta worthy of th« port. It is oxpected that a large number of entries will bo received from all parts of the colony for the Champion Fours, as well as for the other important rowing events on the second day's programme. A meeting of all delogatos and committee will be held at the Pier Hotel at 8 o'clock to-night, when the various amounts on the lists of the canvassers should be sent in, bo that the full programme may be issued at once. With a little combined energetic action, there is nothing to prevent the forthcoming regatta excelling anything that has hithorto beon held here. We have received from tho editors, Mesßrs. W. H. Field (Secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association) and A. S. Biss (Secretary of tho Star Boating Club) a copy of tho second year's issue of " The New Zoaland Rowing Almanac and Oarsman's Companion," which has just been published. Tht work is admirably compilod, and should be in the hands of every oarsmen who wishes to keep himself posted in the aquatic records of the colony for the last and previous years. Several special features of interest to all admirers and devotees of aqnatics have been introduced. Foremost amongst these are articles on "Rowing" and "Somo Faults Noticeable in Now Zealand Rowing," written expressly for tho Almanac by an ex-Univer-sity coach, who is now in the colony. Then there is a well-executed photograph of the champion amateur four of the colony, bosides very full records of all the regattas and club races held in New Zealand during the year, an interesting review of the season's work, " Elementary Hints " by the Rev. John Still, an artiole on "'The Use of Rowing " by Dr. Fell, a register of the rowing olnbs of the colony, and various other mattors which we have not space to dilate upon. Messrs. Field and Bisa aro to be complimented upon the comprehensive character of thoir book, for which we can predict a popularity quite commensurate with that of last year's publication. Crews to represent the Star Boating Club at the forthcoming Wellington regatta were selected last night by the committee as follows : — Senior Outrigged Raoe— A. S. Biss (bow), W. E. Bendall (2), G. Cooper (3), J. E. Hume (stroke). Ladies' Plate— G. Elliott (bow), M. C. Barnett (2), A. W. Newton (3), J. Duncan (stroke). Junior Outrigged— o. J. Cooper (bow), W. Morrah (2), O. Millward (3), C. Richardson (stroke). Maiden Inrigeed Race— H. Pownall (bow), G. Hume (2), O. H. Porritt (3), F. Pownall (stroke). Senior Double Soulls— A. S. Biss (bow), J. E. Hume (stroke). Senior Pairs— W. L\ Bondall (bow), G. Cooper (stroke). The senior outrigger crew will row in the ooxswainleas boat Comet, and will, as in previous years, be steered by A. S. Biss, who has for that reason been shifted from his old position on the stroke-seat, which he occupied in the Nelson regatta. This race, as well as the senior double sculls, is the competition for the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association's championship for the current year.
