PROPERTY TAX ASSESSORSHIP.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir— l notice in Southern papers that a Mr. John Church, who was formerly Assessor for the Property Tax in the Waitaki, and who wa3 recommended by the Council for, reappointment, waa passed over; and- on onquiry the Premier wrote stating that it was in consequence of Mr. Church's having been a candidate for Parliament at the last general election. In Wellington, however, the Premier has conourred in the appointment as assessor of a gentleman who openly avows his intention of being a candidate for Te Aro at the next election. Notice it ! lam, &c. Political Consistency.
In connection with tho railway accident at Fish River ft at ion, Now South Wales, mentioned in our Australian oablc messages today, some anxiety has been caused in the city to-day by the fact that the surnames of two of the injured persons correspond with those of two Wellington citizens who are at present engaged on holiday trips in Australia, viz., Messrs. J. R. Riley and J. Rees George. Fish River station, we learn from tho Railway Department, is situated on the main Hoe between Sydney and Melbourne, about 24 miles westward of Goulburn. As, however, no information has been received by the friends of either of the tourists, it is extremely likely that the agreement of names is mere coinoidenoe. The Chief Justice is expected back from Wanganui on Wednesday evening. The subscription Hat opened at the City Council offioe for the Post Office Clock Fund was still blank this afternoon. The office of the Clerk of Works, General Post Buildings, Wellington, has been connected with the Telephone Exohange. I The detective department is investigating a reported caso of housebreaking at Petone on Saturday last. The complainant is a Chinese gardener, who states that he left his hut at 2.30 on Saturday morning to come into Wellington with vegetables. In a box on the premises he loft a sum of £51, and on returning home in the evening he found entry had been made to the place through the forcing of a back window, and the money had been stolon. The detectives believe they have obtained a olue to the perpetrator of the robbery. On Saturday morning some logs were ignited accidentally on Mr. Siever's property, Makara, and the fire spread with great rapidity. At one time it threatened to set on fire some 600 acres of recently-felled bush belonging to Mr. M'Monamen, but owing to the energetic action of about 20 men, who volunteered to put it out, this extent of damage waa avoided. Chains of men carried water from a small creek to the top of the hill, and by this moans extinguished the fires. The heavy and welcome rain soon averted all further danger. Had the bush taken fire, the damage would have been very serious. An important export trade in timber from the Manawatu district through Wellington for the Australian colonies is likely to grow up. The Kentish Lass, now in port, is to load 250,000 ft of white pine, which ia to be brought down from Feilding by rail. We are requested to draw special attention to the sale of household furniture to be held by Messrs. T. Kennedy Macdonald and Co. to-morrow afternoon, at 2 o'clook, on the premises of Mrs. Wm. Baird, The Terrace. Full details will be found in another column. The Vivian-street Mutual Improvement Sooiety being desirous of affording 'the yonng people of Wellington the opportunity of spending an entertaining and instructive evening havo arranged with Mr. W.
