INTEMPERANCE.
TO THB EDITOU. Sir— l bow to no man in a desire to see the population of New Zealand temperate in their habits, and I acknowledge that the tocul abstainers are doing good work; but I do feel that the colony is very seriously libollcd by those who Bay the drinking habits of the people are on the inorpaae. These people must surely be ignorant of the true state of j^things. Are they aware that 10s a head the population was what it oost tho oonntry 'for imported beer, wines and spirits last year?— ,42312,000 was the total amount. This surely proves that we are fat from being as bad as wo are made out to be. I do not think a cause at any time is strengthened by exaggerated statomonta. The promoters of temperanoe have plenty of sufficiently good reasons to advance in support of their views without descending, as very often they do, to abuse of everybody who does not agree with all the extraordinary statements they put forth. I am, &c. Be Temperate.
