FIRE ALARMS.

TO THK EDITOB. Sib— l note that a correspondent in your issne of last night draws attention to the desirability of somo better mode of giving flro alarms, but the faot is tho whole question of prevention and extinguishing of. fires in this city requiroß thorough investigation, and the present friction that seems to exist among tho members of the Firo Brigade intensifies the fooling in many minds that there is something radically 'wrong. It goeß without Bayinpr that Wellington, being tho most wooden city in Now Zealand, ought to be the beat protected, but in the opinion of those best able to judge it is the worst protected of any city in tho colony. lam credibly informed that Bomo seven months ago a deputation waited 'upon the City Council from tho Wellington Fire Underwriters' Association, and stated that they had dpoided to form a properly equipped paid salvage corps, the oost of the plant to bo JS3OO, and the annual expense about .£3OO. The only concession the Association asked from the Council for this outlay was that they should fit np eleotrio fire alarms in the various Wards of the city for the use of the Fire Brigade and Salvago Corps, the cost of whioh would bo about .£l2O or .£l3O. "The matter was relegated to the Works Committee, and I believe that is the lost that has been heard of it. Ido hope that the new City Council will see it to be I their duty to give the whole of this very ' important question their immediate and serious consideration. I am, &c, Citizen. Wellington, 9th October, 18S8.
