CUTTING THE COW'S TAIL OFF. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir— ln your issue of the 22nd instant I see that you refer to a case of a boy—William Hedges— having deliberately cut off a oow's tail. The lad is my son, and while not in any way wishing to screen any case of wanton cruelty to a dumb animal, I respectfully submit to you the real facts of the case. The two cow boys, the other being considerably older than my son, were skylarking together, and, presumably daring eaoh other to foolish acts, the older boy, I was told by their employer, gave my son the knife, and my son then did not do as your reporter would infer, out the oow's tail off. but severed not more than two inches from the tip of it. The boy has been punished by doing 24 hours in the lock-up, and by tho infliotion of a fine, of 40b. I think that had the punishment been visited upon both parties implicated, and not upon one only, the matter -would have beon more fairly dealt with. lam fully aware that it was a cruel thing to do, the tip of the cow's tail having been cut off for one night and one day without being noticed by any one at the milk-shed, only those who wore implicated in it knowing the fact. Thanking you for allowing me this far. I am, Ac, William Hedges, Newtown, 28th May.
