THE RENTING OF POLICE STATIONS.
Tho Commissioner of Police in preparing a report on the question of rented stations. At the present time those cost the country °vor .£2OOO per annum, and will, nnloss buildings are erected on Government sites cost a still larger sum as property inoreases l n V st« a # DnnGdin al °no the rent amounts to A 450 a year, and a recommendation has, we believe, been made to build on a portion °ftf tn .° gaol reserve in one of the best aitos in Dunedin. It is considered that tho expenditure of £2000 would meet ill Btation requirements, and effect a saving of £300 per annum. In this city about £75 per annum is paid in rent for suburban stations, and this, it is said, could be avoided by «U,« U ,™ lner ?. n tho Mount Cook si to a* b. cost of £ *W or £500. Mount Cook is h«ld by the authorities to be the most central position for working the forco, and must eventually be tho main police depot from whence the chief portion of the city must be worked. Such being tho case, it is thought to be of pnblio importance, both from motives of economy and publio convenience, that the building B hould be erected with the loast possible delay. It 18 the opinion of the Commissioner that at least £1000 per annum might be saved by a judicious expenditure in briok buildings, whereby the heaviest rents oould be saved We hear that the reductions in rent made during the lato tour of inspection amount to about £300 per annum, and firther reductions, by dispensing with certain stations, will be carried out if approved by the Government.
