The whitebait season has fully sot in, great quantities boing caught, though the fish are not plentiful to-day owing to tho heavy sea on the bar. _ A great many men on the Midland railway line are still out of work. Thoy are anxiously looking forward to now contracts being lot. It is considered vory probablo thoro will be some now onos shortly. The demand for timber is so great that the local mills are quito unable to supply it, and considerable quantities are being imported from Hokitika.
