UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 Aucexand, 15th Septomber. It is said that buyers of kauri gum in Auckland are now paying away .£7500 per week, or about J6390,000 per annum, for gum from all parts. This is beside the amount paid for labour, packing, &c. Donedin, 15th September. The recent performance by the amateurs of " lolanthe " realised .£4OB, of whioh J3160 is net profit to the Benevolent* Asylum and Orphanage. At tho Education Board, Dr. Brown questioned the wisdom of offering praise on one hand to teachers who had succeeded in obtaining largo percentages of passes, and censuring on tho other hand toachers who had not been so successful, without taking into oonsidoration other features of teaching. He also stated that reports were occasionally heard of children at schools, where largo percentages of passes were obtained, having extra work thrown on them, and of having longer hours. . Some other members of the Board expressed concurrence with Dr. Brown's remarks. The Benevolent Trustees spent no less than .£6Ol in outdoor relief last month, or J8137 more than the previous one. This Day. At the Police Court the Brothers O'Hagan wero each fined £50 for having an illicit still. Invercargill, 15th Septomber. The Wyndham Dairy Factory has sent an agent to Great Britain to soil their stock of oneese, whioh will be shipped immediately. The Resident Magistrate gave judgment to-day in a case in which Mr. Coventry, a sohoolmaster, sought to recover a sum for stationery supplied to defendant's children at sohool. His Worship decided that there was nothing to compel parents to pay tuch oharges, and gave judgment against the plaintiff. Tho practice of collecting similar fees by sohool committees is oommon here, although protests aro frequently made against it.
