RAILWAY RETURNS.

The return of railway revenue and expenditure for the four weeks ending 28th May show the former to have been £79,981 10s 6d and the latter £55,043 7s 3d. Of tho former, the North Island contributed £23,898 2s 7d and the South £56,083 7s lid, and of the latter, the North Island absorbed £19,509 Is 5d and the South £35,534 5s lOd. In the corresponding period last year the revenue was £76,306 17a 9d and the expenditure £54,140 12 a 6d. The North Island contributed £22,630 3s id and absorbed £19,502 10s 7d, and the South contributed £53,676 14s 5d and absorbed £31,638 la lid. The proportion of_ expenditure to revenue on the several lines for the respective periods of 1886 and 18S7 were: — North Island— Kawakawa, 6195, 6227; Whangarei, 99-81, 7679; Auckland, 79-28, 8476; Napier, 5755, 55-22; Wellington, 71*56, 73-fO; Wanganui, 70-34. 85-91. Middle Island— Hnrunui-Bluff, 55-44, 57-88; Greymouth, 48.03, 57-19; Westport, 47-82, 41 '61; Ne150n, 6775, 66-46; Pioton, 11711, 105-77. Grand total, 60-19, 63-29. On tho Wellington seotion the revenue was £4987 12s as compared with £4429 10s 5d in the corresponding period of last year. The number of passengers carried was 25,000 as against

21,146, the fares amounting to £1952 8s 7d as against £1671 3s 4d. The goods traffic returned £2737 10s 8d as compared with £2553 17s 4d.
