This Dat. (Before D. M. Luolrie, G V. Shannon, and W. Seed, Justices). DRUNKINNESB. Eobert Patterson and David Noble were fined 203 each or three days' imprisonment. Five firut offenders were Each fined 5b or 24 hoars in default. A young woman was charged
with having been drunk on Saturday night, but stated that her ootdition had been the result of her having taken chloroform, whioh she had taken on account of her finding herBelf in a strange place without friends or money. She was found in the street in an unconscious state, and had to be conveyed to the stationhouse in a cab, and was visited by a medioal man, who restored her to her senses. The Bench discharged her on her promising to pay the expenses. OBSCENE LITKBATURK. Henry Lenehan, a young man, was brought up charged under the Printers and Newspapers Begistration Act, ISGB, with having committed a breaoh of the statute by distributing a pamphlet entitled " Such Things Exist," written by Drs. Botterell and Gilbert, of 181 Liverpool-street, Hyde Park, Sydney, without an imprint. Inspector Browne informed the Benoh that the police had discovered the defendant, who pleaded Guilty, distributing the book, whioh w»b & disgusting publication, w the street. Prisoner was in the habit of giving boys whom he met 6d to distribute the books for him. The Chairman said, after looking at the pamphlet, he considered the charge should have been for disseminating obscene literature. Mr. Browne informed the Benoh that he had seized upwards of 1000 copies of the books. The Bench imposed the minimum penalty, a fine of £5, recoverable, by default, or seven days' imprisonment, and as the defendant said he had no money, he was sent to gaol. A BLACK SPOUSE. Henry Hay ward, a shiny-faced negro with a genial smile, was oharged with deserting his wife at Chrietohurch. The prisoner, in reply to the Bench, laughingly said he had no wife. Detective Browse stated that the accused had been arrested on receipt of a telegram from the police at Christchuroh as he was on the point of leaving by a barque for Newcastle. He was ordered to bo sent to Christchuroh.
