Educational Institute.

The quarterly meeting of the members of this institution was held at the College on Saturday last, Mr. Watson, Vice-president, being in the ohair. Mr. Canavan proposed the following resolutions: — "1. That the Government Insurance Association be petitioned to constitute the teachers canvassing agents. 2. That the teachers form a guarantee society for the faithful performance of their canvassing dnties, so that in the case of defalcation each pays his portion pro rata. 3. That every teacher insures for an amount equal to one year's salary at the least. 4. That the policies be convertible into annuities at or above the age of 60 yean, and that agents can draw their commission as earned, or allow it to remain in the hands ot the Insuranoo Association towards annuity, as they may think fit. 5. That tbo Government be petitioned to enrol teachers of five years' standing on the civil list entitled to retiring aflowanoe only when incapacitated by old age or permanent ill-health. 6. That it be compulsory for all teachers to subscribe at least 1 per cent, annually of their income, to form a fund for the superannuation of the aged, and aiding the widows and orphans of the teachers." Mr. Canavan read a paper in which the resolutions were embodied, and arguments were advanced in favour of eaoh. After some disoussiou, Mr. Home moved, as an amendment, "That a committee be formed to draw up a scheme with regard to annuities; the committee to consist of Messrs. Watson, Thistle, fiarniooat, Cole, > Canavan, and the mover; three to form a quotum, and to report." Mr. Hulke seconded the amendment, whioh was oarried. Mr. Thistle moved the following resolution, which was oarried, " That a meeting be held the first week in Ootober to oonßider the committee's report, and to communioate with the other branches of the Institute throughout the colony, so that a general aoheme might be submitted to the Conference meeting in Dnnedin in January." It was resolved—" That, in the opinion of this Institute, the appointment of teaohers should rest solely with the Board, and on no account be entrusted to the Committees." It was resolved that a copy of the resolution should be forwarded to the different branches of the Institute, and that it be brought before the Conference at Donedin in January. The question affeoting the minimum sohool age was, on the motion of Mr. Thistle, deferred till the next meeting. It was decided that delegates to the Conference should be elected at a special meeting to be held next month, travelling expenses to be paid by the members of the Institute. Mr. Hulke moved the following resolution :— " That this meeting cannot refrain from expressing its regret that the promoters of the Industrial .Exhibition have not taken advantage of the great opportunity afforded by that Exhibition to promote the cause of technical education by a weekly course of leotures on the industries of the colony, and the manufacturing processes conneoted therewith." Mr. Prendeville seconded the motion, whioh was carried unanimously. A vote of condolence having been passed to the family of the late Mrs. Wilkinson, the meeting adjourned.
