THE STATE OF THE STREETS. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir— Can you or any of your readors tell me what has happened to onr City Fathers ; havo thoy gone to sleep, or are they in a trance, doing a little seoond-sight business, and trying to find out what the streets of Wellington will look ?ike 20 years hence? If they aro asleep now, I do trust they will soon wake up, and do something to our abominably filthy streets. Go where you may, you will see nothing but mud and dirt, such as I have not seen for yeira. The streets are now allowed to take care of themselves all ovor the oity, and they are a perfect disgrace to the City Council. The scavenging is done in the most niggardly fashion, and what little is done, is done at a time of day when business is most brisk. In other oities I have seen this scavenging and crossing sweeping started at early morn in the leading thoroughfares, so that the least inconvenience possible is given to the publio ; however, here, the little work that is performed is scarcely started by 9 o'olook. If wo oannot afford a little more expenf". turo on the necessary works of the oity, whtt is the ueb of keeping an Engineer at a salary of £500 a year? Much better do without him, and get a foreman or overseer at £150 and spend the balance on the streets, for I certainly think we do not require an Engineer for tho very simple work now going on. I am, &0., Ratepayeb. Wellington, 13th July, 1885.
