BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Tho monthly mooting of tho Board of Education was held this morning, tho members present boinpr Mr. J. R. Blair (chairman), Hon. G. R. Johnston, Rev. J. Paterson, Mossrs. Bunny, Beetham, Buchanan, and Mason, and Dr. Newman. A roport from Mr. O. C. Howard on tho rocent test examination in the Normal School was referred to the committee. Miss Kate Taylor was appointed pupil teaoher at the Tawa Flat School, Miss Boyes pupil teacher at the Ohariu School, and Miss McGowan teacher of tho Conrtenay-placo School. The resignation of Miss Robertson, of the Conrtenay-placo School, was accepted, tho lady having entered into the marriago state. Miss Bright, of the Nowtown School, applied for an increase of salary. It was stated that the young lady had aocepted the position knowing that it was not a remunerative one. The Bo ml decided to allow tho matter to stand over until after the holidays. A similar application from Miss Foist, of the Fernridgo School, was considered. An increase of salary from £30 to £10 was dosired, as Miss Feist's parents aro leaving tho district. Tho matter was loft in tho hands of tho chairman. Tho Board decided to grant £5 each to the Jndgeford, Eketahuna, Makara, and Matarawa committees as remuneration for sewing teachers. The Newtown Committee reported that Mr. Manning, one of tho teachers, had returned to his duties. The quostion of fixing an organ or harmonium in the Gladstone School was left to the Committee. The Chairman promised to see whether it was desirable to incur the expense of testing the water meter in the Thorndon School. An application for a bell for the Mataura School was acceded to. The Ohariu Committee applied for a vote to enable them to paint the school house. It was deoided to ascortan the proposed cost. A letter was read from the Karori Committee applying for a grant of £10 with which to carry out repairs to the teacher's residence. The application was granted, the case being an urgent one. The Board's architect was instructed to report as to the cost of repairing the roof of tho Ekotahuna School. An application from Mr. J. Ingram for the ÜBe of a room in the Newtown School, for the pnrpose of enabling him to carry on an evening olaes, was referred to the local oommittee. The Hon. G. R. Johnston was appointed a member of the Finance Committee. The Chairman and the Hon. G. R. Johnston were appointed a oommittee to make arrangements for the carrying on of the Terrace School. The Board deoided to inform the Pahautanui Committee that the land attached to the teacher's residence practically belonged to the master, and could not bo let for grazing purposes, as suggested. The scholarship examination was fixed for the 19th and 20th proximo ; the Wairarapa pupils to be examined in the Greytown School, and those from Wellington in the Training School, Thorndon. It was decided that the residents of Belvidere should meet at 7 o'clock on tho 10th proximo, for the purpose of deciding upon the boundaries of the district. The Chairman reported that two tenders bad been accepted for the erection of schoolhouses at Dalefield and Pahiatua. That at the former place to cost £249, and that at the latter £235.
