The Wellington Customhouse.
We regret very muoh to learn that the Government have this day deoided to take a portion of tho new General Post Office Building for Wellington Customhouse purposes. It is intended, we believe, to use part of the ground floor in this way, and to re-arrange the rest of the building as regards its internal allocation to tho various divisions of the Postal and Telegraphio Department. From what we oan learn this ohange will be very prejudicial to th« publio convenience in several respects, and it will involve large curtailment of the space available for the business of the publio in oonneotion with the Post and Telegraph Offioo in that part of the building most easily accessible. It is not yet known whether the publio Telegraph Offioe will be relegated to an upper floor, or whether it will be mixed up with the Post Offioe ou the lower story. Either plan wonld be highly objwtfonable, and wo hope that the Wellington members of Parliament, as also the munioipal and harbour authorities and the Chamber of Commeroe, will lose no time in entering a very strenuous protest against this shabby treatment on the part of the Government.
