Mares' Produce Stakes, 1J miles. — Navigator, 1 ; Hecla, 2; Jessie, 3. Navigator won easily. The Sydney Handicap, l£ miles. — Sardonyx, 1 ; Proctor, 2 ; Balmoral, 3. Sailed, this afternoon — Pacific mail steamship City of New York, for San Francisco, via Auckland. The ironworkers of this city are agitating for an increase of wages on account of the high price of provisions, and a serious strike is imminent. The schooner Merchantman, 184 tons, of this port, struck on a re«f near Port Hacking to-day, and sank shortly afterwards in deep water. All hands got ashore in safety. Tins Day. Another of the claims against the Government for compensation for land resumed at Darling Harbour for railway purposes has been settled. In this case the claimants, Messrs. Maiden, Hill and Clark, sued for £20,000, but the Court awarded only £4900. Melboubne, 7th September. Obituary. — Dean Backhouse, of Sandhurst.
