A seaman named Alfred Palmer, on the Rio Grando, has been arre3ted, charged with wounding the boatswain of the tame vessel. The two had a quarrel when Palmer was about to take his dinner. He had a knife and fork in his hand, and in the struggle the knife struck Carlson, tho boatswain, in the side. Two children aro reported as having died at Wanaki through eating unripe fruit. A man named Lenneway is supposed to have been drowned in Cat Uns river. While sailing in a flat-bottomed boat with a companion the boat filled. Lenneway swam to the shoro, but has not since been heared of. Hia mate was picked up very much exhausted. Gisborne, 18th November, Mr. Price, R.ftl.,is very ill. and itis stated that a medical consultation advises that he cannot, under the most favourable circumstances, return to duty for some months. In the meantime the want of a Resident Magistrate is much felt. ' Christchurch, 18th November. A poll was taken to-day on the subject of borrowing for the waterworks scheme proposed by the City Council. Great opposition has been manifested to the proposal, which, however, meets with general tavour from the Press. The "sandwich" men promenaded the town, calling on people to vote against it, and opponents to the measure were very active in their endeavours to work up agitation against the proposal. The result was that it was rejected by 863 against 432. Auckland, This Day. Two burglaries were reported to-day. Cary's Opera Company performed " Maritana" last night, the performance being a great success. The company leave for Nelson on Tuesday, after a successful season. ______^_^_____
