ELECTION INTELLIGENCE.
His Excellonoy the Governor has boon pleased to appoint Mr. George Sisson Cooper to be Clerk of Writs, and Mr. Hugh Pollen to bo deputy to the said clerk, under the Regulation of Elections Act, 1881. Mr. W. B. Edwards, solicitor, has announced his intention to contest the election for South Wellington. Dr. Nownian addrossed tho eloctors at Spiers' Hall, Earori, last night. There was a good attendance, and Mr. C. C. Graham was voted to the chair. Dr. Newman in his address, which occupied about an hour, touched upon the prinoipal topics of tho day, and at its conclusion he answered a number of questions to the evident satisfaction of his hearers. A vote of oonfidenoe was moved and also a vote of thanks only, but the former was carried by a largo majority. At a meeting of electors of Franklin North. Major Harris Baid a hue and ory was raised against him for attending tho Irish Land Leaguo meeting at Wellington. H» had attended the meeting, bat declined taking any part whatever in the proceedings. Mr H Farnall has definitely announced himself for Bodney. Dunedin, 27th Ootobor. Ml\ Bulloph, a Liberal, has announced himself a oandidate for Wallace. Mr. Mandcrs intends contesting Hokonui. At the Trade and Labour Council last evening, it was resolved to adopt the following political platform: — With regard to Crown lands, that they Bhould be leased only, and not sold ; land alroady sold to be taxed ; also encouragement of local industry ; the eight hours' system to be legalised ; no further immigration ; technical education to bo added to the present system; an Employers' Liability Act ; prohibition of instruction in skilled labour in prisons ; looal option and the abolition of bottle lioenses and law reform. Ashburton, 27th October. Mr. J. Ivcss, a candidate for the Wakanui electorate, addressed a crowded meeting in the Town Hall this evening. He avowed himself an opponent of the present Government, but would not support Sir George Grey as a loader of any party. He was in favour of Mr. Bryoe's aotion as Native Minister, in his endeavours to bring to a termination the Waimate Plains difficulty ; but condemned the past aotion of the Government in native matters. He also condemned the Gaming and Lotteries Bill. He would support an income tax on incomes abovo £200. He favoured the reading of the Bible in schools, and condemned the railway tariff. He stated that he was opposed to the uniform rate throughout the oolony. He was in favour !of an eleotive Upper Honso. A vote of confidence and thanks was passed at the conclusion of hiß address.
