THE NATIVE CRISIS.
His Excellency the Governor has signed to-day the warrant calling out the volunteer corps in those places where volunteers have offered their services for " the front. A special meeting of members of the New Zealand Engineer Corps of Submarine Miners is to be held this evening at the Drill Shed, "to take into consideration the position the corps ought to take up in the present state of affairs." The Hinemoa arrived at Opunake early this morning, and lannded the Wellington Naval Volunteers at 9 o'clock. The Hinemoa goes to Nelson this evening, to fetch the volunteers from that place. Mr. Bryce has released the two native youths whom he arrested on suspicion on Tuesday, and has sent them to Parihaka with a note to Te Whiti, warning him of the conduct of his followers in pulling down Mr. Fleming's fences and stopping the Government drays. It is reported that Te Whiti has expre- sed strong disapproval of the conduct of the natives in destroying European property, stopping drays, &c, but this is not yet confirmed. It is also rumoured that the natives have pulled down some of Mr. Hunter's fencing near Manaia, but this, too, is uncorroborated, and is generally disbelieved. Mr. Bryce has gone to Opunake to-day to meet Major Atkinson, who arrived there by the Hinemoa this morning. Some natives have started fencing on another section (No. 52) of Government land, on the seaward side of the main road. With the view of placing readers of the Evening Post in possession of the fullest and most accurate information froni " the front," a gentleman of great experience in military and native matters has been despatched to the " disturbed distriot " oa Special Correspondent for this journal. In the present critical state of affairs, hiß telegrams will doubtless be looked for with considerable interest.
